The new Shimano Aldebaran MGL is the lightest low-profile baitcasting reel ever. Weighing only 135g, it perfectly suits any light BFS rod but is equally capable of handling heavier lures and large, powerful predators when needed.
The Aldebaran MGL is one of those reels you really have to fish with (or at least handle) to believe how light it truly is, almost rivaling its BFS cousin in terms of weight. If you are the type of angler who generally fishes with lighter lures but also wants a reel to handle medium lures, especially in open water, this might be exactly what you are looking for. A use that truly fits this lightweight beauty is fishing with metal and vibe lures. Lighter even than the lightest spinning reels, and more direct and compact, you can fish with the Aldebaran MGL for hours without effort.
The lightness of the Aldebaran is due to the magnesium construction used both in the HAGANE body (with Ci4+ composite side plates) and in the shallow spool. It is the lightweight MGL spool with Silent Tune technology that gives this reel its casting performance, as the force required to rotate the spool is minimal. And once it is spinning, it does not need heavy force to keep turning. The result is longer casts with lighter lures. In use, you can feel the benefit of X-SHIP technology when the pressure of a big fish is on, but if you are looking for a reel suitable for continuously fishing with heavy lures or big predators, there are other models in the Shimano range that are more suitable. This is a lightweight reel that fits perfectly between a traditional baitcaster and a BFS-designed model.
